There are many different adjectives which can be used to describe a river. It’s important to note that there is no ‘right’ adjective to use for a river because the description will depend on the vocabulary of the speaker.

The following are some of the most common adjectives to use for a river:

  • long
  • big/large/great
  • small/little/tiny
  • deep
  • shallow
  • clean
  • dirty
  • cold
  • blue, dark blue, green or brown
  • fast/rapid/quick
  • slow/sluggish
  • flowing
  • stagnant

Words to describe the River

Here are some examples of how adjectives can be used to describe a river:

-“The Amazon is the greatest river I have ever seen.”

– “The Danube is very big, but the Amazon is even bigger!”

– “The São Francisco is a little shallow.”

– “The Nile must be the longest river in the world, but I’ve never been there to see it!”

– “The Thames is dirty because of all the factories.”
